Bioeconomy is a rapidly developing area and the business environment of the sector is changing constantly. In the province of Oulu Region and its surrounding areas there are large bioeconomy initiatives and biorefinery feedstock base changes. At the same time the increase in research findings and novel innovations open up new processing possibilities and conditions for new business. There are plenty of unutilized possibilities in the bioeconomy value chains, e.g. for high value bioproducts. Industrial scale processes side streams may offer new, feasible business for the SME sector.
The growth of bioecomy is strongly depending on the companies´ inputs and the R&D supporting those. Investments but also new innovations and multidisciplinary know-how are needed for the growth.
Objectives and activities
PPBIO puts into practice the Oulu Region Bioeconomy Strategy that was completed in 2014 and updates and re-orientates the Strategy.
The project will contribute to promotion of bioeconomy networks and conditions for the new business extensively across the North Ostrobothnia by increasing awareness on potentials of the bioeconomy development strategy among enterprises and other stakeholders. The project acts as an integrating facilitator between business and development organizations. Company symbiosis are supported by open innovation environment and project activities. The tools include, for example, regional bioeconomy forum of the key actors of bioeconomy value chain and targeted support for all SMEs of the bioeconomy sector.
Ongoing bioeconomy project activity will be evaluated from the perspective of implementation of the strategy. Existing projects will be supported and networked with respect to their content, if necessary, and new projects are stimulated to themes which are covered insufficiently. Provincial bioeconomy network will be linked to international networks in the field.
