Using both statistical and interview data, the focus and impact of regional RDI investments in Northern Ostrobothnia project has studied the regional and sectoral specificities of companies' research, development and innovation activities and their investments in RDI. The study has examined what kind of RDI profile North Ostrobothnia has in relation to the most important peer regions (Pirkanmaa, Varsinais-Suomi) and how RDI activities are structured in companies of different industries and sizes.
The project has studied the functionality of current support and financial infrastructures from the perspective of companies operating in Northern Ostrobothnia. Based on the results of the research project, it is possible to understand the significance of RDI activities for regional development in Northern Ostrobothnia and to identify regional strengths and areas for development. The research has been used to identify challenges and uncertainties related to RDI research and statistics. The results of the study show that the total regional volume of companies' RDI activities is not in itself an appropriate indicator of regional development.
