The Regional Board of Northern Ostrobothnia met on Monday 8 June for its last meeting of the spring season to discuss, among other things, next year's budget planning and the current situation of the maritime spatial plan.
Implementation plan for security of supply and overall safety approved
The Regional Board approved the implementation plan for the security of supply and comprehensive security of Northern Ostrobothnia for 2026-2027. Changes in the geopolitical environment and the security situation highlight the need to examine security of supply and overall security as part of regional development. The priorities of the Regional Programme for Northern Ostrobothnia are broadly linked to these themes and provide a strong basis for strengthening preparedness in the region. The implementation plan ensures that the measures support the region's RDI activities, businesses, people's daily lives, as well as safety and security of supply.
Updating of Finland's maritime spatial plan continues
The the Board of the Regional Regional Assembly took note of the planning status of the maritime spatial plan, held a discussion on the preliminary draft of the maritime spatial plan and authorised the Regional Regional Assembly of Southwest Finland to request comments from stakeholders as part of the joint preparation of maritime spatial planning. The MSP describes a shared view of the guidelines for the future sustainable use of the sea area. The maritime themes and stakeholders to be taken into account in the plan are the energy sector, maritime transport, fisheries, aquaculture, extractive industries, maritime industries, blue biotechnology, cultural heritage, tourism and recreation, as well as the marine environment and marine nature. In addition, the needs of national defence and the special characteristics of maritime areas are taken into account. The Regional Regional Assemblys of Lapland, Northern Ostrobothnia, Central Ostrobothnia and Ostrobothnia are responsible for the maritime spatial plan for the Bothnian Sea, the Kvarken Sea and the Bothnian Bay. The plan identifies TEN-T ports of international importance and other ports of regional importance, as well as major shipping routes. In the planning area, a functional connection is demonstrated between the ports of Oulu and Luleå and across the Kvarken between Vaasa and Umeå. Special areas for winter shipping have been specifically designated for connections from the Kvarken to the ports of the Bothnian Bay in order to coordinate shipping in cooperation in cooperation with other forms of sea use. Fishing areas have been supplemented to cover different types of fishing: coastal net fishing areas, trawl fishing areas and traps. The planning area is well-placed for large-scale offshore wind power development. A total of seven offshore wind power ‑ areas have been allocated to the northern planning area, four of which are located in the northern part of the Bothnian Bay: one in the Iin-Simon, two in the Siikajoki-Hailuodo and one in the Pyhäjoki-Raahe sea basins.
