The European Commission's work programme for 2021 has been published
The European Commission's work programme for 2021 has been published. The work programme shall include the actions to be carried out by the Commission in the course of the following year. It informs citizens and the legislative institutions of the Commission's political commitments to present new initiatives, withdraw existing proposals and revise existing EU legislation.
The work programme for the coming year foresees a shift from a strategic level to implementation for the six political priorities of the Commission. Priorities include the European Green Deal, Europe’s digital readiness, an economy that works for people, strengthening the EU’s role on the world stage, promoting the European way of life and giving a new impetus to European democracy. Concrete actions to be implemented in the course of 2021 have continued to be placed under the priorities.
Annex 1 of the work programme lists all new initiatives for the coming year, withdrawals from previous proposals and revisions of existing EU legislation. There are 44 new initiatives for 2021, including:
– Updated Communication on EU Arctic Policy
– Fit for 55 package to reduce EU emissions by at least 55% by 2030
– Updating the New Industrial Strategy for Europe to address the impact of the coronavirus
– the new European Agency for Biomedical Research and Development
– measures to implement the Circular Economy Action Plan for Europe, the EU Biodiversity Strategy and the Farm to Fork Strategy;
– a roadmap with Europe’s digital targets for 2030;
– Communication on a long-term vision for rural areas.
The Commission’s work programme for 2021 is closely linked to the Recovery Plan for Europe, NextGenerationEU and the reinforced EU budget for 2021-2027.
