Climate change adaptation plan for Northern Ostrobothnia to be developed in the IISOPPI project
IISOPPI – Innovative ideas for adaptation in a changing climate in Northern Ostrobothnia has started. The Climate Change Adaptation Plan will be completed in 2027.
The project will develop a climate change adaptation plan for Northern Ostrobothnia, which will extend into the 2050s.
The plan, drawn up in cooperation between the Finnish Environment Institute and the Regional Council of Northern Ostrobothnia, includes:
-the assessment of regional climate risks and opportunities; and
-Climate and societal development scenarios.
-Furthermore, socially just adaptation measures will be identified.
The work is carried out in extensive interaction with various stakeholders and municipal actors are involved in the co-creation of the plan. The plan takes into account local specificities and priorities, utilising the work done by the municipalities in the area in relation to adaptation to climate change. Climate Roadmap for Northern Ostrobothnia 2021-2030 - Towards carbon-neutral Northern Ostrobothnia Recognise climate change adaptation as a key theme. The IISOPPI project implements and refines this work.
At the 1st Steering Group meeting of the IISOPPI project on 12 May 2025, the objectives and measures of the 2-year project were reviewed.
In autumn 2025, four workshops will be organised in different parts of Northern Ostrobothnia, as well as one online workshop.
The steering group consists of the National Climate Unit of the ELY Centre, the National Emergency Supply Agency, Naturpolis Oy, the City of Oulu, the University of Oulu, the municipality of Siikalatva, the municipality of Ylivieska, the Regional Council of Northern Ostrobothnia and the Finnish Environment Institute.
The project receives funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Regional Council of Northern Ostrobothnia. Budget: EUR 229 556 for the duration of the project 2025-2027.
