Northern actors are delighted: The North is strongly represented in the Government Programme

The Northern Agenda was published today, June 16, 2023. Petteri Orpon The government's program. The key actors of Northern Finland, regional federations, cities, higher education institutions, chambers of commerce and business organisations have jointly promoted the cause of the North during the winter and spring, with the key objective of recording the Government Programme on the role of the North in promoting growth, security and international cooperation in the whole of Finland.

‘The voice of the north has been identified and heard. We have worked closely with the regional parliamentarians and other influencers, and the work has produced results. In particular, the fact that the programme will be implemented under the leadership of the Prime Minister's Office, i.e. under the leadership of the Prime Minister's Office, is very good", says the Mayor of Oulu. Seppo Määttä.

“The Northern Agenda has been a top priority for the region in national lobbying. We are very pleased and thank you all for your cooperation. This isn't the job. Next, we will prepare for influencing the content of the programme and cooperating with the Government and ministries", says the Rector of the University of Oulu. Jouko Niinimäki.

“With the Northern Agenda, we have highlighted the changing geopolitical importance of the region, the opportunities for economic growth and security.  The matter was clearly of interest to the House of the Estates and, for example, the Regional Council of Northern Ostrobothnia was heard twice about the situation in the region and the northern programme", says the Regional Director vs. the Regional Director Markus Erkkilä.

The Government Programme also includes other topics that are important for advocacy in the region. The Government Programme includes the implementation of the Oulu-Liminka double track, which has been a long-term goal for the region. The electrification of the Tornio-Kolari railway will also be implemented from the transport investments in the north. The importance of the North for logistical security of supply has been recognised. In addition, the need for an industrial policy strategy has been raised from the northern perspective. There are also important entries on the priorities and continuity of RDI funding in the programme.  

The government programme is long and more detailed analysis takes time. However, the actors in the region are satisfied with the achievement of the main objectives.
