EU invests significantly in Northern transport links – close to €2 million funding for the New North project
Finland, Sweden and Norway are joining forces to develop the northern region and its transport system. The European Union's Interreg Aurora programme has provided substantial funding of almost EUR 2 million to the New North – Transport, Logistics and Security of Supply project, which focuses on the development of the transport and logistics system in the northern region.
The almost EUR 2 million funding granted by the Interreg Aurora programme strengthens cooperation in the northern region. It enables smoother transport chains, security of supply, electric air traffic and the development of green transport corridors. The aim is also to respond to the realisation of the region's future investment potential and the opportunities for the development of technology related to transport and logistics.
The project will improve the competitiveness and security of supply of Northern Ostrobothnia. It supports both the implementation of the Northern Programme and the preparation of the transport and logistics strategy for Northern Finland", confirms the Vice President of Planning. The aim of the New North project is to develop a sustainable transport system in the northern region and to take into account future transport opportunities. The project aims to respond to the changed geopolitical situation in the western Barents region and will continue to develop logistics in the region based on the information collected in previous transport projects. The primary objective is to strengthen cooperation between the stakeholders in the region and to improve transport connections in the northern region.
In Finland, the Regional Assemblys of Northern Ostrobothnia, Kainuu, Lapland and North Karelia coserve as in the project. The Kvarken Regional Assembly, the regions of Västerbotten and Norrbotten in Sweden and the regions of Tromsø and Finnmark in Norway are also involved. In addition, the project receives support from a large cooperation group, which ensures the flow of information and smooth interaction.
The main partner of the project is the Regional Assembly of Lapland in Finland and it works together in cooperation in cooperation with regional stakeholders in Sweden and Norway. The Regional Assembly of Oulu Region participates in the project and co-finances it. The project will start in autumn 2023 and last for three years.
