Commission announces €800 million plan for clean energy projects
On 18 May 2022, the European Commission launched a new plan key EU cross-border energy infrastructure projects as part of the Repower EU plan. In its Repower EU Plan, the Commission's key objective is to promote the self-sufficiency of the EU's energy system and the de-fossilisation of Russia. The target is to be phased out before 2030.
Funding for the Repower EU plan is approximately EUR 800 million
Project selection and possible funding are based on: The Trans-European Networks for Energy (TEN-E) and CEF for Energy the framework of which it forms.
TEN-E is based on trans-European infrastructure planning and provides a framework for identifying projects of common interest. These projects will contribute to the internal energy market, security of supply and sustainability in pre-defined energy infrastructure themes.
CEF Energy –instrument is the only dedicated EU financial instrument for financing cross-border energy infrastructure. CEF Energy may only award grants to projects of common interest. In addition, up to 15% of the funding is available for cross-border projects in the field of renewable energy.
In order to be identified as being of common interest, projects must bring significant benefits to at least two EU countries, increase competitiveness, improve the EU’s energy security and contribute to sustainability. CEF - Energy the financial support aims at maximising the benefits of decarbonisation in the energy sector.
Applications for funding must be submitted by 1 September 2022. The projects to be funded will be selected before the end of 2022.
