Nearly 30 food service points in Northern Ostrobothnia will participate in the local food day on 3 September

Finnish Food Day is celebrated for the third time on Saturday, 4 September. To celebrate this, 28 different food service units in Northern Ostrobothnia will serve local food made from Finnish and Northern Ostrobothnian ingredients at their meals on Friday, 3 September.

The local food day provides an opportunity to increase the number of locally produced foods on the menus and to test different products and regional novelties. The use of local food increases the vitality, economy and self-sufficiency of the local area, as well as the traceability of the origin and production method of the food.

The aim of the local food day is for municipal food services to make more and more use of local raw materials and products, and for the origin to be visible to the customer. “Municipal food services are already working closely in cooperation with producers to bring ingredients from our region to the menus. Municipalities are also interested in products, novelties and product development in their own area", says Soilla Hiltunen, Project Manager of the Ruokeva project, about the women's farms and households in Oulu.

The local food day includes at least 28 municipalities and offices: Alavieska, Haapajärvi, Hailuoto, Ii, Kalajoki, Kempele, Kuusamo, Liminka, Lumijoki, Merijärvi, Muhos (Muhos Municipality, Joint Authority for Education OSAO Muhos Unit), Oulainen, Oulu (Oulu Production Kitchen Ltd / Lööki, Northern Ostrobothnia Hospital District, City of Oulu, Oulu Service Institute), Pudasjärvi, Pyhäjoki, Pyhätä, Raahe, Reisjärvi, Sievi, Siikajoki, Tyrnävä, Utajärvi, Vaala and Ylivieska.

Local ingredients on menus

For example, Muhos and Utajärvi offer minced meat bullying from Tervakankangas' potatoes and Viskaali's minced meat, salad in cooperation with paprika green salad from Vegetableshovi's vegetables. Muhos celebrates the local food theme week, and you can follow the topic on their social media channels.

In the food services of the municipality of Vaala, local food is visible at all meals of the day. Breakfast includes porridge from Tyrnävän Mylly flakes and smoked cheese from Kuusamo, dirt from Viskaali meat for lunch, potatoes from Northern Potato, sauce from Sienesta Oy mushrooms and Finnish carrot grated. The dessert is Vaala's cheese and local jams.

The Lumijoki comprehensive school and Ensilumi daycare centre offer creamy perch soup from Karinkanta potatoes and Varjakka fish, as well as Pulla-Pirtti rye bread.

Ouluntuotantokit Oy produces porridge from the organic barley grains of the Kinnunen mill, berry bushes from the domestic berries of the vegetable garden, for example, for the schools and kindergartens of the City of Oulu. Pulla-Pirtti rye and organic cucumbers and tomatoes are also served. Well-being facilities, such as services for the elderly and home-cooked meals, have fried vendace and mashed potatoes from the Kuha fish store.

In the city of Kuusamo, salmon soup, swedes and carrot sleepers are eaten, as well as Kuusamo Cheese and Petäjälämpin Herkku rye.
