Ten years of multidisciplinary organisation cooperation in Northern Ostrobothnia

In 2024, the Regional Assembly of Oulu Region celebrates its tenth year of operation. No special festivities are planned, but during the year we want to emphasise the effectiveness of the organisation's work even more strongly. “The role of the organisations of Northern Ostrobothnia in the development of the region and in promoting the well-being of the citizens of the municipality has been significantly strengthened year by year. In ten years, cooperation has intensified and effectiveness has increased", said Chair Esa Aunola at the meeting of the Organisational Advisory Board for Northern Ostrobothnia on 5 February. In particular, the importance of lobbying was highlighted in the discussion. There is a need for this, and cross-sectoral cooperation between organisations is a strength. During the jubilee year, we want to invest in advocacy in the work of the Advisory Board. The aim is to reach both decision-makers and citizens, and to highlight the work and results of organisations and also the Advisory Board in different forums. The programme includes meetings, negotiations, statements, a report on cooperation between municipal organisations and information on the Advisory Board's activities in different channels. The jubilee year is crowned by a traditional organisation award for a distinguished organisation operator. Its criteria and instructions for participation will be published at a later stage. Active participation in the development of the region is one of the key tasks of the Advisory Board. This meeting offered a new opportunity when the advisory board participated in a climate workshop organised by the Canemure project of Oulu University of Applied Sciences and the Regional Assembly of Oulu Region. The members of the Advisory Board were able to present measures for the climate work in Northern Ostrobothnia and share their own practical experiences. “Participation in the workshop was very active and a lot of ideas emerged. Their contribution was valuable to us and will help us understand the overall picture of climate work", said Ritva Isomäki, Senior Specialist for Climate Work at the Regional Assembly of Oulu Region. The ideas received will be used in updating the climate road map of the region. Its core idea is "Everything matters". In Northern Ostrobothnia, organisations and their work are also part of the solution. Iida Hyvärinen, Chair of the Regional Youth Regional Assembly: young people are affected by climate issues

Iida Hyvärinen, Chairman of the Northern Ostrobothnia Youth Council, is looking forward to her position of trust in the Northern Ostrobothnia Climate Action Advisory Board. He says that he discussed with the members of the youth council about young people's suggestions for climate work in the county. "We have discussed issues such as increasing public transport routes, carbon sinks and agriculture as carbon sequestration," says Iida Hyvärinen. According to Hyvärisen, climate issues affect young people a lot and are also discussed outside of meetings. "We are interested in what kind of planet we leave behind and what kind of planet we leave for future generations," Iida sums up. The task of the Advisory Board for Climate Work in Northern Ostrobothnia is to guide the formation of regional climate and energy targets. The Advisory Board monitors its operating environment, promotes the promotion of strategic objectives and monitors their implementation. The tasks of the Advisory Board also include promoting interaction and cooperation on climate issues in the region. From the perspective of the near future, Hyvärinen highlights the importance of wind power in Northern Ostrobothnia. “Windpower is an asset to us”, he explains. Hyvärinen also reminds us of the geographical scope of Northern Ostrobothnia. This is explained, for example, by a survey conducted for the Youth Council, which charted young people's thoughts on what is the most beloved nature in their own municipality. “Forests, water bodies, swamps, greenery, rivers and good opportunities for outdoor activities were highlighted in the responses. Of course, it must also be taken into account in climate work that municipalities are different in the region.” Hyvärinen expects energy issues to be strongly present in the Northern Ostrobothnia climate work advisory board. “Will we say that, at the moment and in the near future, young people’s concerns are focused on energy issues,” Iida says. The second term of office of the Advisory Board for Climate Work in Northern Ostrobothnia has been appointed for 2022-2025. Jussi Ylitalo, Chairman of the Regional Government of Northern Ostrobothnia, chairs the Advisory Board and Ritva Isomäki, Senior Specialist at the Regional Council of Northern Ostrobothnia, serves as secretary. The Advisory Board cooperates closely with the Canemure project of Oulu University of Applied Sciences.

POPclimate coordinates work that sets milestones for the region's climate goals - Towards carbon-neutral Northern Ostrobothnia

The POPclimate project, which coordinated the work on the climate road map for Northern Ostrobothnia, has ended. The main result is a climate roadmap for Northern Ostrobothnia 2021-2030 - Towards carbon-neutral Northern Ostrobothnia *Northern Ostrobothnia Climate RoadMap 2021-2030 - Towards a carbon neutral Ostrobothnia A climate roadmap that looks like a region and is based on the latest information and extensive interaction was approved by the Provincial Government on 15 February 2021. The work was steered by the Northern Ostrobothnia Advisory Board for Climate Work, chaired by Matias Ojalehto, together with Towards Carbon Neutral Municipalities and Regions, Canemure, in cooperation with the Regional Cooperation Group. The co-operation network created in the work will continue to operate even after the project. Seven key themes and a total of nearly 130 measures were identified for the implementation of the climate targets. These are implemented through cooperation. Pohjois-Pohjanmaan EU-tietopiste järjestää webinaarin: Asiaa disinformaatiosta (Teams-tapahtuma)

Webinaari disinformaatiosta järjestetään torstaina 25.3. kello 18 alkaen. Puhujiksi saapuvat viestinnän ja turvallisuuspolitiikan ammattilainen, tietokirjailija Janne ”Rysky” Riiheläinen sekä Ilkka-Pohjalaisen päätoimittaja, valtioneuvoston entinen viestintäjohtaja ja Naton strategisen viestinnän osaamiskeskuksen yksikön entinen päällikkö Markku Mantila. Disinformaatio on tärkeä kysymys EU:lle, sillä kansalaisten altistuminen laajamittaiselle disinformaatiolle, niin harhaanjohtavalle kuin suorastaan väärälle tiedolle, on suuri haaste Euroopalle. Euroopan avointen ja demokraattisten yhteiskuntien perusta on julkinen keskustelu, jossa tasapuolisesti ja läpinäkyvästi asioista tietoa saaneet kansalaiset voivat ilmaista mielipiteensä ja vaikuttaa vapaiden ja oikeudenmukaisten poliittisten prosessien kautta.
