The Advisory Board for Northern Finland on the broad lines of the future and advocacy

The first meeting of the Northern Finland Advisory Board was held on Thursday 29 February 2024. The Advisory Board for Northern Finland is a cooperative body for dealing with matters common to the provinces of Northern Finland. In 2024, the Regional Council of Central Ostrobothnia will hold the presidency.

Preparatory status of the Northern Programme

Prime Minister Petteri Orpon the Government Programme Strong and caring Finland It has been recorded that the Government, under the direction of the Prime Minister's Office, will launch the Northern Programme. The aim of the programme to be drawn up is to promote the full exploitation of the potential of Northern Finland, especially from the perspectives of economic growth, regional vitality, boosting investment, skills development and the availability of labour. In addition, the aim of the programme is to promote Finland's security of supply and self-sufficiency in the changed security policy situation and to strengthen security in Nordic, EU and NATO cooperation so that the new geopolitics and our route to the west are taken into account. 

State Secretary to the Minister for Finance Riikka Slunga-Poutsalo brought the Government's greetings to the meeting of the Advisory Board and opened up the objectives set for the Northern Programme and the state of preparation.

“It is great that Northern Finland is co-developing its region. We have a lot to offer," Slunga-Poutsalo said.

Objectives of the European Parliament elections in the regions of Eastern and Northern Finland

The Northern Finland Advisory Board discussed a draft of the key messages and objectives of the regions of Eastern and Northern Finland for the European elections and the work of future MEPs.

The importance of regional, structural, agricultural, forest and climate policy for the regions of Eastern and Northern Finland was highlighted in the discussion on cookies. Transport and logistics, research, development and innovation policy, as well as education policy and the availability of skilled labour are also key messages in influencing the European elections.

Northern Transport Strategy 2024

The Northern Transport Strategy 2036 is a strategic vision shared by the regions of Central Ostrobothnia, Northern Ostrobothnia, Kainuu and Lapland for the development of the region's transport system. The strategy focuses on trans-regional transport system issues that are common to Northern Finland. Particular attention has been paid to perspectives that are characteristic of the north and differ from the rest of Finland.

The Advisory Board took note of the state of play of the preparations and referred to the importance and clarification of the regional balance of the strategic objectives.

The Advisory Board for Northern Finland consists of the leading elected officials and regional leaders of the Regional Councils of Kainuu, Central Ostrobothnia, Northern Ostrobothnia and Lapland. In addition, representatives of the region participate in the meetings. The Advisory Board promotes matters common to Northern Finland at both national and international level.
