Effectiveness of organizations' advocacy work: Recording of an association session available for viewing
Speaking at an organisation event on 21 February 2022, Member of Parliament Katja Hänninen encouraged organisations to engage in long-term, systematic and active advocacy work. In order to be effective, organisations need to take into account some key issues. It's good to be on time with your goals. It is worth following what matters are coming up for preparation and actively highlighting important points of view for your organisation. It is good to find out who the responsible persons are and target the message to them. Katja Hänninen encouraged politicians to contact them boldly and offer them valuable expert help from organisations. The advocacy work is made more effective when the background work has been done well and things have been summarised as well-founded top goals in an easily understandable form. There are plenty of different advocacy and communication channels and it is good to use them in a variety of ways.
“The role of social media has taken on a major role in lobbying and bringing issues to the public debate. Social media is an effective tool and I believe that its role will be further strengthened," said Katja Hänninen. He also encouraged organizations to work together. Collaborative advocacy is always more effective.
The City of Oulu has invested heavily in the development of community activities and municipal influence. Cooperation with organisations is already close, but in the future we want to better identify the places where we work together and make the partnership more effective. The focus is on building trust and open dialogue between the city, its citizens and organisations. “Well-organised and active advocacy channels serve both parties and guarantee a good outcome. This is a win-win situation for organisations and the city” said Pasi Laukka, Head of Community Activities, in his own presentation. Right now, the topical issues in the city of Oulu include, among other things, the reform of the criteria for granting organisation grants and the drafting of a welfare plan. Organizations want to be involved in the work. This is already possible in the organizational evening on 28.2.
