Sources

The data source for the business cycle publication for clusters is Statistics Finland's customer-specific business cycle service. The monthly indices of the business cycle service measure the change in the variable under review relative to the level of the base year. The base year is 2021 (2021=100). The source material of the statistics is the Tax Administration's self-assessed tax data (OAV data), in addition to which Statistics Finland's direct data collection and annual statistics are used. The calculation of the indices is based on change estimation and the so-called panel method is used in the calculation. The method compares the comparable observations of the month under review and the corresponding month of the previous year by taking into account, among other things, mergers and acquisitions and changes in reporting practices related to accounting. The data also covers start-ups and closures.

The data will be revised through future publications due to, for example, changes in the data available for calculation or new information received. For the latest month, the coverage of the Tax Administration's OAV data, measured by turnover, is approximately 95-98 per cent. The OAV data is collected for a period of 12 months, during which time companies can also report changes to the data they have previously reported. The annual data of the Business Register are also updated in cooperation in cooperation with a delay of 2-12 months from the end of the period under review. Mergers and acquisitions, changes in the location structure of enterprises, changes in industries and start-ups and closures also cause revisions to the data.
