Regional resource flows

The report on regional resource flows in Northern Ostrobothnia has been completed. The report was prepared by Ramboll Finland Oy and Natural Resources Institute Finland.

Regional resource flows in Northern Ostrobothnia (Publication of the Regional Council of Northern Ostrobothnia B:99)

Presentation material of the final seminar 11.4.

The Northern Ostrobothnia Regional Resource Flows project promotes the more efficient and sustainable utilisation of regional material flows in Northern Ostrobothnia. The aim is to provide an overall picture of the use of natural resources and other materials in the area and to identify opportunities for more efficient use of resources, to increase the positive impact on the economy and to reduce the environmental impact of the use of materials. In addition to regional reviews, the energy sector and two case projects are examined separately.

The project consists of three work packages:

Work package 1: Description of the current state of the regional economy and material balances
– Current state and material balance of the regional economy of Northern Ostrobothnia, resource efficiency indicators, major opportunities for more efficient use of materials
– Current regional economic situation and material balances in the Raahe region and the Southern Oulu region

Work package 2: Piloting a resource flow model - modelling the impacts of changes in the energy sector at the level of the whole province
– Effects of new energy production on regional resource flows throughout the province (e.g. wind power, other decentralised and centralised utilisation of renewable energy, changes in the use of fuels) – anticipation and impact of changes

Work package 3: Detailed examinations for two case projects
– Mapping and impact of the resource flows related to the nuclear project
– Mapping and impact of resource flows related to the wind farm project of around 10 power plants

The results of the project include studies on regional material flows in Northern Ostrobothnia, material flows in the Raahe region/Oulu Southern region and the impact of new energy production on regional resource flows.

The duration of the project is from 1 February 2017 to 30 June 2018. It has received funding from the European Regional Development Fund. Other funders of the project are the Regional Council of Northern Ostrobothnia, the Raahe Regional Development Centre, BusinessOulu, the Ylivieska Regional Association, the Nivala-Haapajärvi Region NIHAK r.y. and the Haapavesi-Siikalatva Development Centre.

Project budget: EUR 143 830, of which EUR 100 681 from the ERDF and the State.
The main implementer of the project is the Regional Council of Northern Ostrobothnia and the co-implementer is the Raahe Region Business Services.
