Project description
The main objective of the Interreg Battery Region project is to develop a cross-border competence-based strategy for the different stages of the battery industry. The idea is to offer relatively high unemployment groups a concrete opportunity to work in a new, growing industry. Here we see a concrete opportunity to strengthen the integration of young people and foreigners into the labour market, as well as a workforce that needs to change careers due to the adaptation needs of companies.
The aim of the project is to create a model of how the new industry will be given better opportunities to establish itself in our region. The focus of the project will be on the competence needs of the battery industry. The project participants will conduct a survey on the skills required by the battery industry and the training needs that arise. During the project, we aim to identify and determine the development needs of training and compatibility systems for the battery industry. The main emphasis is on upper secondary education, UAS and adult education.
During the project, we will establish a network of labour market and education actors relevant to the battery industry to exchange information and experience. The network provides the basis for future cooperation and coordination of training, including between countries. The aim is to develop cross-border solutions for employment and mobility. The aim is to create a common cross-border labour market area for the battery industry and to consolidate cooperation between regional entities strategically responsible for skills needs. It is also about implementing smart specialisation strategies in the regions and making better use of international networks in it.
Based on the analysis carried out in the project, we will develop proposals for training opportunities in battery manufacturing. The result may be, for example, a cross-border operator and training map showing pathways to occupations from different starting levels, the development of complementary trainings according to the training map instead of overlapping, etc. We need to create skills development measures that meet the needs of the industry. The result may also be a concrete proposal setting out different pathways to the profession. The content of future courses would have been designed according to the industry's own wishes.
The project is coordinated by Region Västerbotten. The Regional Council of Northern Ostrobothnia, the Joint Municipal Authority for Education OSAO and the Municipality of Skellefteå acted as co-implementers of the project. The project is funded by Interreg Nord and the Regional Council of Lapland.
