North Ostrobothnia's climate road map provides stepping stones for the region's climate goals
Background and objectives
The Northern Ostrobothnia Climate Roadmap (POPclimate) project, which started in May 2019, brings up-to-date climate and energy targets for the European Union and Finland to the level of the region. Based on the latest information, the project will create a regional roadmap towards a sustainable and low-carbon economy, as well as an operating model for promoting and evaluating the targets.
In recent years, Northern Ostrobothnia has had good experiences of municipalities' own climate work, but it is important to increase the activities related to the construction of a low-carbon province and its effectiveness. Cooperation between municipalities and other actors must be intensified, both regionally, nationally and internationally.
The focus is on energy, transport, land use and housing, the circular economy, the bioeconomy and natural resources, as well as knowledge and innovation. The measures in the road map will be put into practice by activating actors in the low-carbon economy.
The aim is to raise awareness of climate and environmental issues, support climate-friendliness and highlight the latest knowledge and practices. The region will be positioned in a general interactive discussion on climate issues.
Target group
Climate change affects all of us and all industries. The main target group is the public sector and companies, which play an important role in enabling and promoting a low-carbon economy. In the future, climate and environmental issues will become an even stronger part of the development of the vitality of municipalities and cities, as well as public procurement and investment. For companies, change can offer new business opportunities.
The climate road map is drawn up in cooperation with the operators.

The Northern Ostrobothnia Climate Road Map (POPclimate) is an ERDF project funded by the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment of Northern Ostrobothnia. The project will run from 01.05.2019 to 30.04.2021 with a total budget of EUR 260 192. The project is implemented by the Regional Council of Northern Ostrobothnia. The project works in close cooperation with the Towards Carbon-Neutral Municipalities and Regions (CANEMURE) project.
