Measures and results of the PPBIO project
The PPBIO project implemented the development strategy for the bioeconomy in Northern Ostrobothnia and made the opportunities related to the bioeconomy known to companies and other actors. The project acted as a connecting factor between companies and developer organisations. The tools were a close form of cooperation between key actors, support for SMEs in, for example, project applications, and bioeconomy sessions. The formation of business symbiosis was supported by an open innovation environment and project activities. Overall, the PPBIO project promoted the formation of bioeconomy networks and the extensive use of new business conditions throughout the region. The regional bioeconomy network was linked to national and international networks in the field. In addition, the project addressed the reorientation of the Bioeconomy Strategy 2014.

Background
The growth of the regional bioeconomy depends to a large extent on the investments made by companies and the research and development activities that support them. Investments are needed for growth, but also new innovations and multidisciplinary know-how. There are many untapped opportunities in the different value chains of the bioeconomy, such as high-value bioproducts. In industrial-scale processes, side streams can provide new, profitable business for SMEs.
The bioeconomy is a rapidly developing sector and the operating environment of the bioeconomy is changing rapidly. Major bioeconomy projects and changes in the raw material base of biorefining are under way in the region and its surrounding areas. At the same time, increased research knowledge and new innovations open up new processing opportunities and prerequisites for new business activities.
