The strengths of Northern Ostrobothnia include abundant biomass reserves and related primary production, clean soil, water and the benefits of Arctic production, as well as functional transport connections. The bioeconomy forms a significant part of North Ostrobothnia's business and benefits the region in a variety of ways. The main sectors are agriculture and forestry, the chemical and mechanical forest industry and the food industry.

The bioeconomy is a rapidly developing sector and the operating environment of the bioeconomy is changing rapidly. Major bioeconomy projects and changes in the raw material base of biorefining are under way in the region and its surrounding areas. At the same time, increased research knowledge and new innovations open up new processing opportunities and prerequisites for new business activities. The regional bioeconomy development strategy for 2015-2020 was updated in extensive cooperation in the PPBIO project in 2019. Check out the results of the PPBIO project on its website.
In Northern Ostrobothnia, the bioeconomy and circular economy form the basis of climate work. Carbon neutrality requires a transition from non-renewable raw materials to renewable raw materials and resource efficiency.
