Updating inventory of valuable landscape areas 2013-15 the selection of nationally and regionally valuable landscape areas in Northern Ostrobothnia was reviewed and their current status, value classes and demarcation were examined. The inventory was part of the assessment of nationally valuable landscapes launched by the Ministry of the Environment.
The main focus of the inventory was on the cultural landscapes of rural areas, especially agricultural landscapes, related settlements, old roads and cultural heritage, as well as possibly landscapes created by some other activity related to primary production. The key areas are those that have survived in a traditional way and are vibrant, diverse in nature and cultural heritage.
A guide was drawn up in 2016 to support the interpretation of the regional plan Everyday life in a valuable landscape area.
On 18 November 2021, the Government adopted a decision on nationally valuable landscape areas. Descriptions and boundaries of 17 nationally valuable landscape areas in Northern Ostrobothnia can be found in the report Northern Ostrobothnia Nationally valuable landscape areas VAMA 2021 .
