Stock of enterprises
The number of enterprise openings and closures is obtained from the registration data of Statistics Finland's Business Register and the Tax Administration, and the registrations of new enterprises are obtained from the Business Information System (YTJ) maintained by the Finnish Patent and Registration Office and the Tax Administration. Data are published quarterly four months after the end of the statistical reference period. The annual statistics are published in October of the year following the statistical reference year. The stock of enterprises is the number of enterprises active at that time, which includes enterprises subject to VAT in respect of business activities or the transfer of the right to use immovable property, as well as enterprises acting as employers. Data on start-ups and closures are updated over time. The number of enterprise openings in the first publication is generally lower than the reality, and the number of enterprise closures in the first publication is higher than the reality.
Turnover of enterprises
Revenue from the sale of the business, net of discounts granted and VAT and other taxes directly based on the volume of sales. The regional statistics on entrepreneurial activity cover almost all industries. The statistical units chosen are establishments that have been operating for more than six months and have employed more than half a person or whose turnover has exceeded the statistical limit defined annually. Turnover data are not available for crop production, animal and game production (TOL 01) and financial and insurance activities (TOL K). The data are published with a 12-month delay from the end of the statistical reference year.
Export turnover (index 2015=100)
Export turnover of all industries, original series. Exports are calculated as the difference between total turnover and domestic sales, in which case they consist of non-taxable turnover, intra-EU exports and extra-EU exports. Exports do not include VAT. The annual data on exports are compiled from the Tax Administration's periodic tax data.
Employment rate
Percentage of employed persons in the population of the same age. The employment rate of the total population is calculated as the percentage of employed persons aged 15 to 64 in the population of the same age. The Labour Force Survey (LFS) is a sample survey used to compile monthly, quarterly and annual statistics on labour market participation, employment, unemployment and working time of the population aged 15-89. An employed person is a person who has worked at least one hour during the survey week to earn a salary or entrepreneurial income. A person temporarily absent from work during the survey week is also counted as employed if the reason for the absence is maternity or paternity leave, earnings-related parental leave, personal illness, holiday or working time arrangements; or if the period of absence is less than 3 months. The labour force includes all those who were employed or unemployed during the survey week.
Number of jobs
‘Employees in the region’ means all persons employed in the region, regardless of their place of residence. Those working in the area form a so-called working day population, the number of which can be seen as a measure of the number of jobs in the area. Every employed person is then thought to form a single job. In this way, even a person working part-time computationally forms a single workplace. If, for example, the work is carried out by a substitute for maternity leave, two jobs may be created. The employed labour force includes all persons aged 18 to 74 who were gainfully employed in the last week of the year and who were not unemployed as jobseekers at the employment office or performing military or non-military service. The information on employment is based on the data of the earnings-related pension and tax authorities.
Youth unemployment
Unemployed persons aged 15 to 24 as a percentage of the labour force aged 18 to 24. An unemployed person is considered to be a jobseeker who is not in an employment relationship and is not employed full-time in business or in his/her own work within the meaning of Chapter 2 of the Unemployment Security Act and who is not a full-time student within the meaning of Chapter 2 of the Unemployment Security Act. An employee who is fully laid off or whose regular weekly working time is less than 4 hours is also considered to be unemployed. Full-time schoolchildren and students are also not counted as unemployed during the holidays. The original figures used in the calculation of the percentage are annual averages based on data for the different months of the year in question. The number of unemployed is based on data from the customer registers of the Employment and Economic Development Offices. The number of employees is obtained only about two years after the end of the statistical year from Statistics Finland's employment statistics.
